I have always invested my retirement money in mutual funds. While looking for alternatives to Wall Street and hoping to take advantage of the current historically low real estate market I found BCFP. My background is in finance thus I focused on Return verses risk. With BCFP in 2010 my ROE was 22.5% and I feel risk is lower than the stock market for 3 reasons: 1) My investments are split up over several properties, 2) Residential real estate is low now and I bought at bargain prices and 3) As the collapse of Wall Street is investigated it is obvious corporate reports are easily manipulated so one really does not know what they are buying.
There was a time when investment advisers predicted long term returns of an average 12% annually. Now the same advisers are less optimistic saying under 10%. One last note, I needed cash flow for my retirement and set up a plan that best did that. Other plans exist depending on your needs.
